Israeli company Virusight Diagnostics has received European approval for its SpectraLIT coronavirus test, which gives results in 20 seconds. The small hand-held device used for the test could be invaluable at airports (among other places) where it would enable the quick screening of passengers before they board their flight. The system involves a mouth (not nasal) swab; another Virusight system, which has yet to receive approval, will employ gargling with mouthwash instead of obtaining a mouth swab.
Quote: “This means that staff in airport booths who are currently tasked with collecting test samples and dispatching them to labs will simply have a machine at hand and be able to give passengers results after just 20 seconds of analysis. The system, which is being piloted at 36 hospitals worldwide, received European Medical Devices Directive approval for a swab version of its test, which allows it to start rollout across the European Union.”
