Each year, many thousands of people lose their lives in earthquakes, millions lose their homes, and countries around the world incur billions of dollars in damages. (The 2010 earthquake in Haiti alone is estimated to have taken approximately 300,000 lives.) Being able to predict when earthquakes are about to happen could significantly help reduce the death toll, but doing so is a formidable scientific challenge. Now Israeli researchers say they’ve discovered a way to predict earthquakes with 80% accuracy.
